A linear television channel was launched by BET France (accompanied by non-linear services such as Bouygues Telecom), Canalsat, Numericable/SFR, and Free. The BET branding would later encompass spin-offs from sister channels, including BET Jams (previously called “MTV Jams”), BET Soul (formerly “VH1 Soul”), and SHO×BET (known then for airing all sci-fi films, earlier named “Showtime Beyond”), as well as VH1, which shifted from MTV to focus on reality shows and subsequently on programming centered around Black Americans. In September 1982 — BET emerged as an independent entity, distinct from any other programming block or channel, yet it still shared space with various cable networks on local systems due to limited capacity for its 24-hour broadcasting until the advent of digital cable provided more room.

Johnson), originally from weekend betting preview Freeport, Illinois, chose to establish his own cable television network. BET originally began as a programming block on USA Network on January 25, 1980, and transitioned into a full cable channel in September 1982.
