One-Day tour: Delhi to Agra --> Fantastic!
A TripAdvisor Review By Giovanni R., California
I arrived in Delhi for a business trip and only had one day to do tourist-y things. Being the procrastinator that I am, I had not arranged anything in advance, so, at 6am on Sunday morning I find myself looking through websites. The Majestic Agra stood out because they clearly lay out what to expect, what is included and what is not, plus some recommendations to make your tour go smoothly. I communicated with Sagar (owner) and he had my tour set up within 45 minutes for a 7:45am pickup (for that same morning!).
Mr. Brijesh arrived in a very comfortable Toyota Arora on time and ready to go. I'm sooo glad I didn't have to drive. Traffic is absolutely nuts, plus the street layout is super convoluted. Fortunately, Mr. Brijesh's experience made for a easy and comfortable ride.
Upon arrival in Agra (3.5 hours), we picked up a guide: Mr. Ali and straight to the Taj Mahal. This is where the instructions of what to bring and not to bring paid off, as we sailed through security and began our walk. 2 hours and countless questions answered later, we were done. Having Mr. Ali here as my guide was absolutely invaluable. Not only did he answer all my questions, but he educated me on the background and history of the place and people. It made my experience here much richer and enjoyable. Suggestion: ask questions. The more you ask, the more you get.
Off to lunch at Barbecue. Yum! If you've never been, be careful not to fill up with the appetizers, as they will keep bringing them until you're ready to go to the buffet. It's very easy to fill up on the appetizers. The buffet is quite good with loads of veg and non-veg options (my favorite: dal bukhara). Save some room for dessert as well.
Next, a visit to one of the local marble artisan shops was super interesting. They show you how the marble is worked and the inlays created and set in. Afterwards, a quick trip upstairs to an amazing display room full of tables, table tops and other large pieces is fascinating. The sheer volume of items is breathtaking. You can spend hours in here looking (and purchasing, if you care to do that). The pieces are incredible. Once done, a short 20-step walk to the small item shop will had me hemming and hawing as to which piece to purchase.
Next, we drove over to Agra fort, an incredibly imposing structure where the Muguls lived. Now mostly occupied by the Indian Army, there is a small area open to tourists.
After Agra fort, a short drive over to the carpet shop... You will find a small number of artisans making a carpet in the front room for demonstration purposes. Very interesting and they are VERY fast. A short walk downstairs to the carpet processing, where the owner Bobby explained how they finish the carpets, including a short demonstration of how they shear the tops of the carpets. Then a walk 2 flights up to the sales area where they lay out a number of carpets from their inventory.
The last stop in Agra was the tour shop. Met with Sagar to give feedback on the tour and got a look at the jewelry and local art they have available. You will have the opportunity to purchase either, should you be interested.
Finally, time to head back to Delhi. Mr. Brijesh did his usual stellar job getting me back, although the nighttime traffic in Delhi was much worse than earlier that morning. It added an extra hour of driving (4.5 hours).
Overall, a fantastic experience and well worth the cost and time. If you have trouble with stairs, you will likely have issues at the shops. They seem to be buit orimarily vertically, so lots of stairs. There are stairs at the Taj as well, although I suspect they likely have some workaround. If you're in a wheelchair, I do not recommend you go inside the Taj Mahal...the crowd is quite packed inside and the walkway is narrow. Not to mention, there are steps and mini-walls to step over.
This is an all-day excursion, make no mistake about it. Be sure to drink lots of (bottled) water to keep hydrated and consider wearing a hat. Unless you're here during rainy/monsoon season, it will be quite dry. Plan accordingly.
